Magnetic drive sealless pumps from Pompe Travaini: High reliability and leak-free operation

By Mattias Steffl

Magnetic drive seal-less pump from Colly Flowtech installed in industrial process environment.

In many manufacturing processes, every last drop is crucial. For example, in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and food industries, there is simply no room for leakage or production downtime. That's why magnetic drive, seal-less pumps have become the natural choice for anyone who wants a safe, leak-free and stable process environment.

In this blog post, we explore why Pompetravaini's magnetically driven sealless
pumps are so appreciated, how the technology works and, above all, what concrete benefits you get on the ground.

What is a magnetic drive pump and how does it work?

In magnetic drive pump uses a hermetically sealed design where the power of the motor is transmitted to the impeller and impellers via two magnetic joints, an encapsulated rotating inner magnet and a rotating outer magnet attached to a drive shaft on the outside of the pump chamber.

A solid partition, often referred to as a ”jug” or ”isolation hood” usually made of Hastelloy C or similar material, separates the fluid between the magnetic fields, which means that

  • no through shaft runs through the pump casing
  • no mechanical seals needed
  • hermetically sealed pump construction
  • there is no contact between the liquid and the surrounding environment

It is an extremely effective solution to achieve leak-free operation.

Five reasons to choose magnetic drive pumps

The reliability that magnetic drive pumps are known for comes mainly from removing the most failure-prone wear part: the mechanical shaft seal.

Below we have listed the five most important factors that together make magnetic drive pumps a stable and safe choice.

1. interchangeability and flexibility

The entire range of Pompetravaini magnetic drive seal-less pumps has been developed and designed in a comprehensive modular system in each series of pumps, allowing for higher flexibility, fewer spare parts and lower costs. In addition, the wide range of TCK seal-less centrifugal pumps is fully compatible with ”standard shaft sealed” centrifugal pumps on the market as these are designed to ISO 2858 as well as ISO 5199. This allows for easy replacement and upgrading without rebuilding existing piping systems.

2. Leak-free operation

By eliminating the mechanical shaft seal, the primary cause of leakage is removed. This results in a more stable process, less downtime and a safer working environment. Especially suitable for hazardous liquids, even in ATEX classified process environment

3. Low maintenance requirements

When wear parts such as shaft seals are eliminated, maintenance needs are also minimized with the right solution. This means fewer unplanned and planned stops, less ongoing maintenance and a lower total cost over the life of the pump.

4. copes with aggressive media

Because the fluid is hermetically sealed in the pump chamber, the pump can be built in material choices that can withstand harsh chemicals and demanding media, even in ATEX-rated process environments.

5. monitoring and measurement capabilities

Many magnetic drive models can easily be equipped with sensors for vibration, temperature, etc. This provides early indications of abnormalities and contributes to a more controlled and predictable operation.

Frequently asked questions about magnetic drive sealless pumps

What is a magnetic drive pump?

A magnetic drive pump is a pump without a mechanical shaft seal. Instead, power is transmitted magnetically between an inner and outer magnet, making the design completely hermetically sealed and minimizing the risk of leakage.

Why choose a sealless pump?

Seal-less pumps are mainly chosen to avoid leakage and reduce maintenance. Removing the mechanical shaft seal eliminates the most common source of failure, resulting in high reliability and longer service life.

Are magnetic drive pumps suitable for chemicals and hazardous liquids?

The answer is yes. Magnetic drive pumps are particularly suited for aggressive, toxic or flammable media as the design is hermetically sealed and can be built in materials that can withstand harsh chemicals, even in ATEX environments.

How much maintenance does a magnetic drive pump require?

Maintenance needs are low. Since the pump has no shaft seal, fewer spare parts are needed and fewer planned stops are required, reducing costs and minimizing unplanned downtime.

How do I know which magnetic drive pump is right for my application?

Pump selection depends on the fluid, temperature, pressure, flow and process environment. It is important that the pump is correctly dimensioned and that the right material is selected. We at Colly Flowtech are happy to help you find the best solution for your particular process.
