Durable and cost-effective pumping solution for demanding chemical applications

By Mattias Steffl

Anodized aluminium air-operated diaphragm pump for the chemical industry, adapted for abrasive media and varying pH values.

Anodized aluminum pump became the solution when our customer in the chemical industry was bringing new products into production from a sister company and needed to review the pump technology. The application involved media with pigments, abrasive particles and varying pH values. A combination that places high demands on material selection, reliability and hygiene - typical of demanding process environments.

Together with our long-term partner Versamatic, we at Colly Flowtech delivered the value, technical expertise and pump technology that the application required. The result was a unified solution that increased service life, reduced the risk of bacterial growth and created a more stable process - while reducing the need for more expensive materials.

Tailor-made solution for a demanding process

The project requirements were clear: the customer needed a pump that could handle abrasive products. The pump also needed to operate stably over a wider pH range. In addition, it needed to reduce the risk of bacterial growth in the process.

To meet these needs, we worked closely with the Versamatic technical team. Together we developed a customized solution with our range of air-operated diaphragm pumps.

Together we developed a anodized aluminum pump, a solution that combines proven pump technology with greatly improved material properties for demanding chemical applications.

The anodized surface treatment provided:

  • Improved corrosion resistance
  • Higher resistance to pigments and particles
  • Wider chemical resistance (around pH 4-9)
  • A cost-effective alternative to acid-resistant pumps

Through our needs analysis and technical advice, the right material could be selected without making the solution unnecessarily costly.

Focus on reliability and longevity

A key objective of the project was to ensure stable operation and long service life. This was especially true in an application where the pumps are subject to continuous wear.

Previously, pumps were made of untreated aluminum, which led to wear and recurring challenges related to bacterial growth. The anodized aluminum pump significantly improved the wear resistance and at the same time contributed to a significant reduction in bacterial growth.

The fact that the pumping technology was also well known to the operators created confidence and a smooth transition in production.

Skills, cooperation and the right choice of materials

Our strength in the project lay in the combination of application understanding, material expertise and close collaboration with our customer and Versamatic. By analyzing the process requirements together, we were able to develop a solution that improved performance and optimized the investment.

At Colly Flowtech, we were responsible for needs analysis and pump selection. In addition, we developed the anodized aluminum pump in technical dialogue with Vercematic. This approach made it possible to ensure the right solution from the start, both technically and commercially.

Advantages of an anodized aluminum pump

For the client, the solution brought several tangible improvements:

  • Longer life of the pumps
  • Significantly reduced bacterial growth
  • Less product loss
  • Stable and predictable operation
  • A cost-effective replacement for more expensive material choices

The increased reliability also contributed to more satisfied operators, fewer disruptions and a safer process. This provides operations and maintenance teams with better conditions for planned maintenance and fewer unplanned stops.

Morgan Malm, Sales Manager Pump at Colly Flowtech, led the project and says:

”Sitting down with the manufacturer and the customer, understanding and solving their needs and requirements, and making it better at the same time, is great and a pleasure. We look forward to continuing to develop solutions where the right materials, the right pump technology and close collaboration create sustainable results in demanding industrial processes.”

When application understanding drives innovation

The project shows how the right material strategy creates control in chemically demanding and abrasive applications.

Through the combination of Versamatic's pump technology and our application understanding, we at Colly Flowtech could take responsibility for the whole. This meant everything from analysis and material selection to a solution that has proven to be sustainable over time.
