This conversion table for surface measurements is designed to simplify everyday life in technical environments where both metric and English units are used. The table provides a quick and reliable overview of common conversions between, for example, square inches, square feet, square meters and hectares. It is particularly useful when sizing equipment, calculating sealing surfaces, selecting material sizes or analyzing process surfaces in industry.

What is surface area?

Surface area is used to describe the size of a surface. This can range from small component surfaces and sealing surfaces to larger floor areas, material surfaces, filter surfaces, heat transfer surfaces, or ground surfaces.

In industry and engineering, surface measurements are often used in design, material selection, technical calculations, and the comparison of specifications where measurements may be expressed in different units.

Common units of area are square meters (m²), square decimeters (dm²), square centimeters (cm²), square millimeters (mm²), square feet (ft²), square inches (in²), acres, and hectares.

Common surface units and their abbreviations

  • cm² (square centimeters) - small surfaces, precision, details in technology/electronics.
  • dm² (square decimeters) - medium-sized surfaces, panels and laboratory materials.
  • m² (square meters) - most common unit for rooms, floors, ground and technical surfaces.
  • a (ar) - 100 m², used in land surveying.
  • ha (hectares) - 10 000 m², common in agriculture and forestry.
  • km² (square kilometers) - very large geographical areas.
  • sq in (square inch / kvadrattum) - small technical measures, mainly in the US/UK.
  • sq ft (square foot / kvadratfot) - construction & real estate in English-speaking countries.
  • sq yd (square yard / kvadratyard) - textiles, carpets, some building surfaces.
  • sq mile (square mile) - large geographical areas in the US/UK.

Common conversions of area measurements

m² to cm²

To convert square meters to square centimeters, multiply the value by 10,000.

Example:
1 m² = 10,000 cm²
0.5 m² = 5,000 cm²

This is a common conversion when larger areas need to be compared with smaller component or material surfaces.

cm² to m²

To convert square centimeters to square meters, multiply the value by 0.0001.

Example:
1 cm² = 0.0001 m²
10,000 cm² = 1 m²

This conversion is useful when small areas need to be converted to the standard unit, the square meter.

m² to ft²

To convert square meters to square feet, multiply the value by approximately 10.764.

Example:
1 m² = approximately 10.764 ft²
10 m² = approximately 107.64 ft²

Square feet are commonly used in American and British specifications, drawings, and technical data sheets.

sq. ft. to sq. m.

To convert square feet to square meters, multiply the value by approximately 0.0929.

Example:
1 ft² = approximately 0.0929 m²
100 ft² = approximately 9.29 m²

This is useful when international specifications need to be compared with metric measurements.

hectares to square meters

To convert hectares to square meters, multiply the value by 10,000.

Example:
1 hectare = 10,000 m²
2 hectares = 20,000 m²

Hectares are primarily used for larger areas such as land, facilities, and outdoor spaces.

acres to square meters

To convert acres to square meters, multiply the value by approximately 4,046.86.

Example:
1 acre = approximately 4,046.86 m²
5 acres = approximately 20,234.3 m²

An acre is a common unit of area in the United States and the United Kingdom and may appear in international documents.
