Avoid costly failures: how to choose the right spare parts for your pumps
Choosing the right spare parts for pumps is crucial for safe, efficient and long-term operation. In industries like food and pharmaceuticals, where every detail counts, the wrong choice of material can quickly lead to unplanned downtime, increased maintenance - and in the worst case, contamination.
In this blog post, we go through what you need to consider when choosing spare parts, and how we at Colly Flowtech help you avoid pitfalls and maximize the reliability of your plant.
Three key factors in choosing the right pump spare parts
Every pumping application has its own requirements. To find the right spare part for pumps you need to be aware of the following:
- Customize by application and operating environment: Different pumps operate under completely different conditions and this affects the requirements of each component. A seal that works well in a water-based process can quickly wear out in a system with high pressure and aggressive fluids and chemicals. So always match the material, design and performance to your real process environment.
- Ensure material compatibility: The material of the spare part must withstand the media being pumped - both chemically and mechanically. The wrong choice of material can lead to seal failures, O-rings that swell, which in turn creates leaks. For example, abrasive fluids often require wear-resistant metal or ceramic parts instead of plastic to last over time.
- Choose original parts or parts of equivalent quality: Accurate fit, certifications and correct tolerances are particularly important in hygiene-critical applications. Original parts, or spare parts of equivalent quality, ensure stable performance, correct tolerances and long service life - especially in hygiene-critical environments. While cheaper alternatives may seem appealing, they often represent a compromise that can be costly in the long run.
Common pump spare parts and what you should consider
Here is an overview of the most frequent spare parts in hygienic pump applications - and what you should consider to choose the right one:
Mechanical seals
A critical component that prevents leakage between rotating and stationary parts of the pump. Producers in the food and pharmaceutical industries often choose stainless steel seals with carbon or ceramic surfaces, as they meet high hygiene requirements. When handling aggressive chemicals, seals made of PTFE-based materials or special alloys are often more suitable.
Diaphragm (for diaphragm pumps)
EPDM or PTFE diaphragms are common in CIP/SIP systems. EPDM works well at moderate temperatures and standard cleaning, while PTFE is the first choice for strong chemicals or high temperatures. Double membrane solutions provide extra safety in sensitive applications.
Valve balls (for diaphragm pumps)
Valve balls control the flow in the pump and must match both media and pressure. In food processes, stainless steel, PTFE or rubber (EPDM/FKM) balls are often used. PTFE provides chemical resistance, while FKM is good for oily or solvent-rich fluids.
Rotors and stators (for progressive cavity pumps)
These parts determine the capacity and precision of the pump. Stainless steel rotors combined with rubber stators (e.g. EPDM or FKM) are used to handle viscous liquids, slurries or sensitive media. The choice of material depends on pressure, temperature and chemicals in the process.
Your partner for safe pump installations and the right pump spare parts
This is a clear example of how the right pump spare part is an important part of ensuring safe, stable and efficient operation. Choosing the right spare part is not just about replacing worn parts - it requires an understanding of the process, conscious material choices and active responsibility for the long-term performance of each component.

What spare parts are needed for a centrifugal pump?
Spare parts often needed for a centrifugal pump include impellers, shaft seals, bearings, o-rings, gaskets and mechanical seals. The wear parts vary depending on the operating conditions and the type of media being pumped.
How often should you change spare parts in a pump?
Replacement of spare parts depends on factors such as operating time, media type, temperature and pressure. In general, regular inspections every 6-12 months and planned maintenance every 1-2 years are recommended to avoid unplanned downtime.
How do I know which spare parts are suitable for my pump?
To find the right spare parts, you need the pump's model designation, serial number and manufacturer. It's best to contact your supplier with this information - preferably along with a picture of the nameplate - to ensure you get the right parts.
Can I use universal spare parts or must they be original?
We always recommend original spare parts. They are specifically designed for your pump model and guarantee optimum performance, longer life and maintenance of the manufacturer's warranty.
What are the signs that a pump needs new spare parts?
Common signs are unusual noises, vibrations, leaks, reduced flow or pressure and higher energy consumption. These indications often suggest that a wearing part, such as an impeller or shaft seal, needs to be replaced.
