How to best store your hose for maximum longevity

By Colly Flowtech

Store hose

Proper storage of hose is essential to maintain functionality, safety and longevity. Whether used in industrial processes, laboratory environments or food production, hoses are exposed to temperature, moisture, light and chemicals. By storing hoses properly, you can avoid unnecessary wear, downtime and premature breakdowns.

How do I best store my hose?

In order to hoses To maintain its properties over time, it is important to control the environmental factors that most affect the material. Here are the key aspects to keep in mind:

temperature

Hoses are strongly affected by both high and low temperatures. Too high temperatures can cause the material to soften, deform or age prematurely. Too low temperatures can make the hose stiff and brittle, increasing the risk of cracking. Therefore, always store hoses in a temperature-controlled environment within the recommended range of the material.

Air humidity

High humidity can contribute to microbial growth, material degradation and corrosion (especially on hoses with metal components). Low humidity can in some cases make materials drier and more brittle. A stable, dry and well-ventilated space reduces the risk of damage and extends the life of the hose.

Electricity

Static charges can occur when hoses are moved, rolled or handled in dry environments. This increases the risk of sparking, which can be critical in ATEX classified areas or when handling flammable media. Proper storage - preferably on non-conductive surfaces and with humidity control - minimizes static electricity.

Ozone

Ozone in the air can break down polymer chains in hose materials, leading to cracks, surface damage and reduced flexibility. It is often found in the vicinity of electrical equipment, making such environments particularly hazardous for hoses. Therefore, store hoses far from ozone sources and preferably in enclosed spaces to minimize the risk of ozone attack.

Light / Darkness

UV light and strong illumination can, over time, damage hose materials, fade colors and make the surface brittle. Therefore, hoses should be stored in the dark or in UV-protected packaging. A dark, cool and dry storage area is usually the best environment for long shelf life.

Further recommendations

  • Avoid storage near electrical appliances that may emit ozone.
  • Do not store unprotected hose where the light comes from UV-emitting lamps.
  • The space should be cool, dark, dry and free of condensation.
  • Use the principle first in - first out (FIFO) to minimize the length of time hoses are in storage, as their lifetime is affected even when stored optimally.
