Optimize your CIP and SIP processes with the right hygienic gaskets

Efficiency and cleanliness are fundamental in the process industries - not least in food and pharmaceutical production where hygiene requirements are particularly high. In these environments, every detail is important, and the choice of gaskets plays a crucial role in ensuring a reliable and safe process.

Gaskets are exposed to high stresses on a daily basis, especially during CIP (Cleaning in Place) and SIP (Sterilization in Place). They have to withstand high temperatures, aggressive chemicals, rapid temperature changes and mechanical stress. If the material of the gaskets is not properly adapted or if the installation is faulty, the consequences can be serious, both for the flow and for production as a whole.

What happens when a gasket deforms?

When a gasket loses its shape and is pushed into the flow, it creates a physical constraint that affects the whole process. Even a deformation of just a few millimeters can reduce the flow rate by up to 20%.

This can lead to a number of problems:

  • Increased risk of contamination
  • Impaired flow in production
  • Material fragments in the final product
  • Damage to other components
  • Longer cleaning times and unplanned downtime

Apart from the technical consequences, this often means production delays, increased quality control and, in the worst case, that the product no longer meets quality and safety requirements.

The solution: choose the right materials and design

By choosing the right gasket material and a stable coupling solution, you can avoid deformation and extend the lifetime of components. An example of a smart design solution is Ultrapharmas Elastoclamp - an innovative Tri-Clamp clamp with integrated elastomer, specially developed for hygienic applications exposed to frequent CIP and SIP cycles.

Unlike traditional clamps, compensating Elastoclamp to temperature changes and vibrations through its flexible design, helping to maintain an even and constant pressure over the gasket. This reduces the need for re-tightening and minimizes the risk of leakage, gasket deformation or gasket push-out in the flow. In addition, the hygienic design supports a stable flow profile and efficient cleaning - in line with the requirements of food and pharmaceutical production.

Proper installation and knowledge are crucial

Many of the problems that arise are not due to the material itself, but to incorrect installation or insufficient maintenance. Therefore, training is an important investment to ensure sustainable and reliable solutions.

With the right knowledge, the need for retensioning and recurrent adjustments is reduced. At the same time, it ensures that each installation is correct from the start. We also recommend that you regularly analyze the load conditions of the process and monitor the condition of the gaskets before problems occur.

Flow impacts - a clear comparison

To illustrate how a deformed gasket can affect the flow, we have compared two scenarios in a diagram:

Diagram showing how a deformed gasket (2 mm restriction) affects the flow rate compared to an ideal flow profile, focusing on CIP and SIP processes for gaskets.
  • Blue line: Desirable flow profile with smooth couplings
  • Red line: Flow profile with 2 mm restriction caused by bulging gasket

The diagram clearly shows how the flow decreases significantly more with restrictions than in a well-optimized installation.

In the video you can also see the difference visually:

  • Left shows an undisturbed flow
  • The right side shows how a deformation affects the flow pattern.

Four customer values with the right packing strategy

When the right materials are combined with proper installation and preventive maintenance, several tangible benefits are achieved:

  • Safety and security - Fewer breakdowns and lower contamination risk
  • Lower costs - Longer lifetime and reduced maintenance needs
  • Effectiveness - Shorter cleaning times and stable flow profile
  • Profitability - Smoother operation, higher productivity and better use of resources

Summary: Smart choices that make a big difference

The right gasket materials, smart solutions and a proactive approach are crucial to avoid flow problems in CIP and SIP processes. Small improvements can have a big impact, not only technically, but also economically. At Colly Flowtech, we help you see the big picture - from material selection to installation, training and long-term optimization.
