What is a gear pump?

In gear pump is a positive displacement pump which uses rotating gears to transport fluid. Two gears spin against each other. As the gears rotate, they capture the liquid, move it through the pump and push it out the outlet. The result is a smooth and pressurized flow. 

There are two types of gear pumps:

  • External gear pump - two gears spin against each other in a tight pump casing.
  • Internal gear pump - a smaller gear rotates inside a larger one with eccentric placement.

Gear pumps are self-sucking. This makes them easy to start even if the system is empty. They work equally well with thin liquids as with very viscous media, as long as the liquid does not contain particles.
